This flower is uncommon and often hybridizes with common or heath spotted orchids. Hybrids can be recognized by the characteristic separated 'spike' at the bottom of the flower, while true Northern marsh orchids have an unbroken diamond shape.

The Manx name for this flower is "Magglyn gorrym-jiarg", which means "Blue-red orchid".
