Wild crab apple trees have thorns, but many hybrids exist that do not. They are generally found on the edges of forests or in places where they have been deliberately planted.
The crab apple is the ancestor of the cultivated apple. Its fruits are edible but much harder than cultivated apples.
The Manx name "Billey ooyl feie" means "wild apple tree".
