This plant is found in wetter areas than Field Scabious and is sometimes seen on riverbanks.

This plant has a short, black root that was once used to treat scabies and the bubonic plague. In folk tales, it was said that the rest of the root had been bitten off by the devil, who was angry at its ability to cure these diseases.

The Manx name for Devil's-bit scabious is "lus y çhengey veg".
