This plant can be distinguished from other thistles by its long, spear-like thorns. It also tends to have large, single flowers.

Spear thistles can be found in many places, but they are officially considered an injurious weed that should not be allowed to spread.

Its Manx name is "onnane yialgagh", which means "thorny thistle".
