Heath Spotted Orchid

Latin Name:

Dactylorhiza maculata

Manx Name:

Bwoid saggyrt

Season:

May - August

Locations where this species is found:
Ballaugh Curraghs

Almost identical to the Common Spotted Orchid, this variety can be distinguished by the fact that its spots do not join up to create lines and by the narrower 'spike' at the bottom of its petals.

Heath and Common spotted orchids can produce hybrids, so there isn't always a clear distinction between the two.
