This strongly scented plant can be found in marshy areas, particularly in the Curraghs that are often filled with its strong scent. The catkin 'flowers' of this plant can be yellow, red or orange, but seem to tend towards orange on the island.
This plant is used as a traditional insect repellent to keep away the midges often found in the swampy areas where it grows. It has also been used in brewing, soap and herbal medicine.
